Database Architecture & Operations

A data layer that stays fast, correct and recoverable under load.

Book a call · All practice areas

Schema design, migration planning and query tuning, plus the operations that keep a production database healthy: monitoring, backups, replication and a restore path that has actually been tested. Built by database architects, not improvised by a generalist.

Who it is for

  • Product teams whose application slows down as data grows
  • Companies planning a migration or a move to new infrastructure
  • Businesses that have backups but have never restored one

Problems it solves

  • Slow at the worst moment

Queries that were fine at launch time out at peak load.
  • Migrations nobody wants to run

Schema changes mean downtime, weekend work and crossed fingers.
  • Untested backups

A backup exists, but nobody knows how long a restore takes or whether it works.
  • A schema that grew by accident

Years of quick fixes make every new feature slower to build.

Capabilities

  • Schema design and data modelling (PostgreSQL, MySQL)
  • Zero-downtime, version-controlled migrations
  • Query, index and connection-pool tuning
  • Backups, replication and scheduled restore drills
  • Row-level security and access rules, tested per role
  • Monitoring dashboards and slow-query budgets

What you receive

  • Schema and migration suite

    Version-controlled, rehearsed and documented.
  • Tuning and index plan

The top queries measured, fixed and budgeted.
  • Backup and restore runbook

A restore procedure that has been run, not only written.
  • Monitoring dashboards

Latency, storage growth and replication visible to your team.

How the engagement runs

6-week initial build · optional ops retainer

  1. Weeks 1–2: Profile the workload

Real workload profiled, top queries identified, and one restore run to find out where you actually stand.

  2. Weeks 3–4: Design and rehearse

Schema changes and migrations designed, then rehearsed in shadow against production-shaped data.

  3. Weeks 5–6: Promote and hand over

Changes promoted without downtime, dashboards and budgets in place, runbook handed over. Operations can continue on retainer.

Pricing and availability

  • Pricing band: EUR 20–60k
  • How the engagement runs: 6-week initial build · optional ops retainer

Questions

Can you change our live database without downtime?

In most cases, yes. Every change is rehearsed first against production-shaped data, and changes that cannot be made online are planned into an agreed window.

Do you also run the database afterwards?

If you want us to. The optional operations retainer covers monitoring, restore drills and quarterly reviews of slow queries and storage growth.

Which databases do you work with?

Mainly PostgreSQL and MySQL, self-hosted or managed, in EU regions by default.
